Paraffin-Wax Therapy

Paraffin wax therapy is a complementary therapy used in therapy centres and clinics which can help with a variety of musculoskeletal problems, such as: Osteoarthritis - Trusted source Rheumatoid Arthritis - Trusted source Fibromyalgia - Trusted source Tendinitis and tendinopathy such as De Quervain’s tenosynovitis - Trusted source Other joint mobility issues - Trusted source The heat from the wax increases blood flow improving circulation and nourishing the tissues with oxygen and nutrients. It also promotes the release of endorphins which blocks pain signals to the brain. This enhanced blood circulation promotes flexibility and function by increasing elasticity of connective tissues such as ligaments and tendons. This also helps to accelerate the healing of the tissues and decreases the risk of injury.

The procedure A session of paraffin wax therapy commences by sanitising the body part to be treated. This is followed by a soft to deep tissue massage with passive mobilizations, after which the body part - usually the hands or elbows - is submerged several times in melted wax heated to a comfortable temperature. Once a thick layer of wax is formed, the body part is wrapped in a special plastic bag or clinging film and a towel or mittens and rests for a few minutes. Whilst the heat does its job, the wax hardens and it is then peeled off leaving a coating on the skin. For larger body parts, or parts that for some reason cannot be submerged (i.e. shoulders, knees, calves, back), a brush or a spatula is used to coat and build up the layers of wax. All other steps are maintained. For hygiene reasons, feet are not submerged. We also do not reuse the wax, making sure that all infection prevention and control measures are in place and followed. Contraindications: Before your initial appointment, you will be required to complete an initial assessment form. Therefore, we advise to attend the clinic 10 minutes before the time booked. Contraindications: - Severe eczema or psoriasis. - Fungal infections, including nail and skin infections. - Warts and verrucas. - Nail separation. - Open wounds / broken skin. - Athlete's foot. - Ingrowing nails. - Severe oedema. - Ongoing radiotherapy or chemotherapy. - Allergy to paraffin. Precautions - you need to discuss with the GP/consultant beforehand and written consent is required: - Diabetes. - Cancer. - Peripheral heart disease. - Mild oedema. Other precautions - you might want to discuss with the GP/consultant first: - Mild Eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis. Other useful info sources: Versus arthritis Physiopedia
